Top Universities for Pursuing Mathematics Programs in India

When it comes to pursuing quality mathematics education and research, India boasts a plethora of esteemed institutions. From the renowned Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore to the prestigious Indian Statistical Institute, the country offers a range of high-caliber undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in the field.

Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Bangalore (Established 1963): ISI, Bangalore offers a B.Math (3 years) degree program and an M.Math (2 years) program.

Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata (Established 1931): ISI, Kolkata offers a 2-year M.Math program.

Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI, Established 1989): CMI provides a B.Sc. degree in mathematics and computer science (3 years), M.Sc. in mathematics, and PhD programs.

Both ISI and CMI admit students to their bachelor’s degree programs based on an entrance exam conducted in late May each year, followed by a personal interview. Candidates need to clear the National Board of Higher Mathematics (NBHM) Ph.D. scholarship screening exam followed by an interview held in March/April each year.

Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (Established 1959): IIT Kanpur provides a 4-year BS in math program, and admission is granted through the IIT-JEE held in early April.

Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai (Established 1945): TIFR offers M.Sc., an Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. program (5 years), and Ph.D. programs.

Harish Chandra Research Institute, Allahabad (Established 1966): The institute offers an Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. program (5 years) and a Ph.D. program. Admission is based on the NBHM Ph.D. scholarship screening exam followed by an interview.

Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) at Pune, Mohali, Kolkata, Trivandrum, and Bhopal: IISER provides a BS-MS five-year integrated program. National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar: NISER offers a five-year integrated BS-M.Sc. program, an integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. program, and a Ph.D. program.

University of Hyderabad (Established 1974): The University offers a BS-M.Sc. integrated degree (5 years) and a M.Sc. degree in mathematics. Admission is based on a written test followed by an interview held in June.
