The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the integration of modern Digital Learning Tools (DLTs) into classrooms, transforming post-secondary education worldwide. What was once a minor aspect of face-to-face instruction has now become the primary medium for learning, significantly enhancing student experiences.

The Impact of DLTs on Learning

DLTs have improved accessibility, engagement, and learning proficiency among students. They played a crucial role during the pandemic, enabling continuous instruction despite unprecedented challenges. By utilizing multisensory tools, apps, and collaborative exercises, DLTs have motivated students to engage with course material more deeply than traditional methods allowed.

Benefits and Challenges of DLTs

While DLTs generally enhance motivation and academic success, their effectiveness can vary based on student demographics and learning environments. As we transition back to in-person classes, it remains essential to evaluate which DLTs to retain and how to integrate them effectively.Our recent study surveyed post-secondary undergraduate students from Canada, Germany, and India about their experiences with DLTs. We explored questions such as:

• How often are DLTs used in face-to-face vs. e-learning environments?
• How effective are DLTs at facilitating understanding of course material?
• Do DLTs impact student motivation to learn?
• Are certain types of DLTs preferred?

Key Findings

Our findings revealed that most students enjoyed using DLTs regardless of the learning environment. Interactive web pages, slide decks, videos, gamification apps, and learning management system (LMS) functions were among the most preferred tools. However, increased use of DLTs did not necessarily correlate with improved academic performance; instead, they significantly contributed to overall course satisfaction.

Recommendations for Effective Integration

To maximize the benefits of DLTs in post-secondary education, consider the following strategies:

• Set Clear Expectations: Establish guidelines for using DLTs in classroom activities.
• Focus on Skill Development: Ensure that DLTs help develop skills that traditional methods may overlook.
